Eco-chic weddings are all the rage these days, so where do you start when planning your green nuptuals? Here are some tips and ideas from Folly Farm’s weddings team. It’ll be great to hear your ideas too - leave your suggestions below…

A great place to start is your choice of venue. Check and compare the green and ethical credentials of potential venues. Do they use renewable energy? Are any profits donated to charity? Is an externally checked and certified environmental management standard or system in place, such as ISO 14001 or Green Dragon?

Don’t forget to send out the wedding invites by e-mail, or using recycled stationary. Then there are all those wedding presents; if you’re doing a gift list, choose the greenest gifts and most ethical products and suppliers you can. Your guests may even like to mark your special day with a donation to charity?

And minimize the environmental impact of transport to and from the wedding. If you have guests turning up at a nearby public transport hubs, is the venue happy to arrange group transfers for you? You could also encourage your guests to share lifts.

When it comes to food and drink, put the emphasis on seasonal, local and organic food. Choose only organically produced wines, champagnes, beers, ciders and soft drinks - you’ll find a great choice these days. To cut your wine miles, go for English and European wines.

Find an ethical wedding ring too, perhaps one made from a recycled and fair trade metal, making sure you avoid war diamonds and other dubious gems. Then, once the all important ceremony is over, biodegradable confetti is best.

Last but not least, you’ll be spoilt for choice when it comes to finding a planet-friendly destination for your honeymoon. Visit the Green Traveller and Alastair Sawday’s websites for some great ideas.

“TREE AID is an international charity that helps villagers in the drylands of Africa unlock the potential of trees to reduce poverty and protect the environment. We came to Folly Farm for our annual team meeting. We spent our time thinking about the progress we had made over the last year and the challenges in the year ahead. Folly Farm was perfect for us. The beautiful surroundings, the excellent conference room with its natural light and the high quality of service created the right conditions for doing great work!”
